Treatment and Surgery of Endometrial (Uterine) Cancer

What is endometrial cancer?

Endometrial cancer is one of the most common gynecological cancers, originating from the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium).
It usually shows symptoms in the early stages, and the success rate of treatment is high when diagnosed early.

The most common symptoms

  • Postmenopausal bleeding

  • Irregular or excessive menstrual bleeding

  • Vaginal spotting

  • Groin or pelvic pain

If you have any of these symptoms, you need to be evaluated without delay.

How is the diagnosis made?

The diagnostic process typically involves the following steps:

  • gynecological examination

  • Ultrasonography

  • Endometrial biopsy (definitive diagnosis)

If necessary, MRI and other imaging methods are used to assess the spread of the disease.

How is the treatment planned?

Treatment for endometrial cancer is determined by the stage of the disease and individual patient factors.

Surgical treatment (the basic approach)

  • Removal of the uterus and ovaries

  • Lymph node evaluation when necessary.

Today, less invasive staging can be performed in suitable patients using sentinel lymph node biopsy (with ICG).

Is closed (laparoscopic) surgery possible?

Yes. Surgery in suitable patients:

  • Using a closed (laparoscopic) method

  • Less pain

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Faster recovery

It can be achieved with its advantages.

Is additional treatment needed?

In some patients after surgery:

  • Radiotherapy

  • Chemotherapy

It may be necessary. This decision is made in a multidisciplinary manner based on the pathology results.

What is the sentinel lymph node procedure?

In some patients, instead of removing all lymph nodes, the sentinel node, which is the initial site of spread, is evaluated.

This method:

  • Fewer complications

  • Lower risk of lymphedema.

  • Correct staging

provides.

Is the same treatment applied to every patient?

No. Treatment:

  • Type of tumor

  • Degree

  • Distribution status

  • The patient's general health condition

It is planned individually, taking all factors into consideration.

How successful is the treatment?

Endometrial cancer has a high treatment success rate because it is usually detected at an early stage.
However, the correct surgical approach and an appropriate treatment plan are crucial.

When should you see a doctor?

  • Any bleeding after menopause

  • Abnormal menstrual irregularities

  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding

In this case, prompt evaluation is recommended.
